Solar Roadways, in an effort to replace our asphalt streets with a source of renewable energy, has developed a roadway system that uses photovoltaic cells (PV) cells.  The Solar Roadway is an intelligent road that not only provides clean energy, but also power, data delivery, and safer driving conditions.  The road is created using connecting square panels, and each panel would be capable of around 7.6 kilowatt-hours of energy a day.  This electric road provides an entirely new eco-friendly element to the way we live.

The Hamburg-based company SkySails has developed a wind propulsion system that will cut both fuel cost and fuel consumption for shipping companies. The SkySails propulsion system consists of a large foil kite, an electronic control system for the kite, and an automatic system to retract the kite. The kites have an area of around 3,400 square feet, and can be flown at altitudes of 330 – 980 feet. It is estimated that a ship equipped with SkySails could consume from 10 – 35% less fuel. There are many ways to help make the world a greener place, and Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program is doing just that, by collecting, recycling, and reusing old sneakers to make new athletic surfaces. Cities and institutions all over the world are combining forces to collect shoes for this program. Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program recycles used sneakers into athletic surfaces, such as basketball and tennis courts. One city, Elk Grove, California, has already collected 4,000 pairs of used athletic shoes, in an effort to keep them out of landfills.
